Amari and Javar Ruffin, whose family lives in Philadelphia, were born via cesarean section on Sept. 29, 2023. The brothers — who shared part of their sternum, diaphragm, abdominal wall and liver — weighed a combined 6 pounds.
Oldest living conjoined twins, Lori and George Schappell, die at 62

The twins, listed by Guinness World Records as the oldest living conjoined twins, died April 7 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to obituaries posted by Leibensperger Funeral Homes of Hamburg. The cause of death was not detailed.

AIIMS had successfully conducted India’s first craniopagus surgery to separate Jagga and Kalia, who were joined at the head. While Jagga has been taken off ventilator, doctors said Kalia’s condition is stable but he continues to be on ventilator support.

While the government hospital wanted to conduct further research on the dicephalic parapagus (two heads and one torso) conjoined twins, the family did not give consent. Such conjoined twins are rare, with one in one lakh births. Sixty per cent of such babies die after birth.

Dr A K Mahapatra, the chief of the neurosciences centre at the AIIMS said, the craniopagus conjoined twins from Kandhamal district are in the ICU and their condition is being monitored by a team of experts round the clock.

The twins are stated to be critical by the AIIMS doctors after the surgery and they would be kept under observation at least for 72 hours, Odisha's Health and Family Welfare Minister Pratap Jena said, adding both are being monitored by a team of experts constantly.
