The rally was expected to march from Batasia to Chowrasta where a public meeting was scheduled. However, the police stopped the march at Batasia and leaders had to hold a meeting at Gorkha Dukh Vivarak Samiti Hall.

The GJM had on Tuesday announced the withdrawal of its indefinite shutdown in the northern West Bengal hills and said the situation would return to normal from 6 am on Wednesday.

In an audio message on Sunday night, Gurung had warned the leaders that if they discussed with the state government, any other issue other than 'Gorkhaland', they would not be allowed to return to the hills.

Pro-Gorkhaland agitation: The police put up roadblocks near the Sukna road crossing and asked them to go back. But the agitators broke the first two barricades and pelted stones at the police. The protesters turned violent and set afire some vehicles parked nearby.

According to police reports, century-old community hall and a TMC party office in the Darjeeling hills were set ablaze by pro-Gorkhaland supporters earlier in the day as the indefinite shutdown for a separate state entered its 35th day.
