Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson (born 15 April 1990) is a British actress and activist. She was born in Paris and brought up in Oxfordshire, Watson attended the Dragon School as a child and trained as an actress at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts. She is promienently known for playing the role of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter film franchise from 2001 to 2011. She also worked in films like The Bling Ring, Noah, My Week With Marilyn, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She lended her voice to The Tale of Despereaux and appearing in the television adaptation of the novel Ballet Shoes. She completed her studies at Brown University and Worcester College with a bachelor's degree in English literature in May 2014. She was honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2014, winning for British Artist of the Year. It was in the same year she was appointed as s a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate gender equality. Watson has promoted education for girls, visiting Bangladesh and Zambia to do so.In July 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.In September that year, an admittedly nervous Watson delivered an address at UN Headquarters in New York City to launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate for gender equality. In that speech she said she began questioning gender-based assumptions at age eight when she was called "bossy" (a trait she has attributed to her being a "perfectionist") whilst boys were not, and at 14 when she was "sexualised by certain elements of the media". Watson's speech also called feminism "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities" and declared that the perception of "man-hating" is something that "has to stop".
