Apart from the GJM, several other hill parties and intellectuals have plans to march on the streets of Darjeeling with black flags and placards. Barring pharmacies, all shops, schools and colleges remained closed. Internet services are suspended since June 18.

When the earthquake hit the hills in 2013, Gurung visited my house and that of many others but the fund promised never arrived. A year later, my father rebuilt the damaged part of the house with his own money. Many others who could not afford to do so, continue to live in damaged homes.

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha( GJM) had given a 12-hour window to schools on June 23 to evacuate boarders. The indefinite shutdown in the hills over the demand of separate state of Gorkhaland entered its 19th day. Normal life was affected due to the shutdown.
Darjeeling unrest: Five security personnel injured in violence

The attack took place on Thursday night when the security personnel had gone to a village near Teesta Valley, 40 km from Darjeeling, to conduct a search operation. A mob attacked the security personnel with stones and traditional Nepali khukri, injuring five of them seriously.

The GTA agreement was signed by the Centre, the state government and the GJM in 2011 following a prolonged unrest in the hills. The GJM asserted that its 45 members had resigned from the GTA last week and the administrative body had ceased to exist.

Some GJM activists were seen participating in the demonstration bare-chested and broke tube lights on their backs leading to injuries. Hundreds of GJM supporters burnt copies of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) accord at Chowkbazar as the security forces kept a strict vigil.
