JMM’s executive chief Hemant Soren took oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand July 4, 2024 days after he walked out of jail in a money laundering case. He took over the CM post from Champai Soren, who had been reluctant to let go of the CM’s post, saying that “it would not look good” as the elections in the state were just months away. He had also asserted that he, too, was a “mass leader”, and there might be attempts to destabilise Hemant’s government again as he was only out on bail.
Hemant, a leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has been a member of the Jharkhand Assembly since 2005. He is the son of former chief minister and senior party leader Shibu Soren. He is also known for his oratory skills and is considered to be a good campaigner.
Born in the village of Raipur in Ranchi district of Jharkhand in 1975, Hemant did his schooling from the Government High School in Raipur and then went on to study law at the Ranchi University. After completing his law degree, Soren started practicing law in Ranchi. He soon became involved in politics and joined the JMM in 1994.
Soren was first elected to the Jharkhand Assembly in 2005 from the Barhait constituency. He was re-elected to the Assembly in 2009 and 2014. He went on to become a Rajya Sabha member in 2009-2010, before becoming the state's youngest CM in 2013 with the support of the Congress and the RJD. His first stint as CM was, however, short-lived as the BJP seized power in 2014 and Raghubar Dar took charge of the state. In 2014, Soren was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly.
He resigned from Rajya Sabha and became deputy CM in BJP-led Arjun Munda's government. The allaince broke up after two years and President's rule was imposed in the state.
After a wait of five years, Hemant-led JMM won the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2019 and he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state.
As the CM of the state, Hemant has also taken steps to promote tourism in the state, such as the development of the Deoghar airport and the promotion of the state as a destination for religious tourism. Soren has also faced some challenges during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, such as the Maoist insurgency and the drought in the state. However, he has been able to address these challenges to some extent.
