Last Updated : 02 Feb 2025
Jagdeep Dhankhar, the 14th Vice President of India, is a distinguished lawyer, politician, and statesman. He has held various positions in the judiciary, legislature, and executive branches of government before becoming the Governer of Bengal in July 2019. Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in a rural village in Rajasthan, India. He graduated from the University of Rajasthan with a law degree in 1978. Dhankhar embarked on a successful legal career, establishing himself as a prominent advocate in the Supreme Court of India. His expertise in various areas of law, including constitutional matters, commercial disputes, and international arbitration, gained him widespread recognition. Dhankhar's foray into politics began in 1989 when he was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu Parliamentary Constituency in the year 1989. He also served as a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. He was also elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh Constituency in Ajmer district in the year 1993-1998. In 2019, Dhankhar assumed the role of Governor of West Bengal on 30 July 2019 , a crucial position that required him to act as the constitutional head of the state. His tenure ended on 18 July 2022. In August 2022, Dhankhar was elected as the 14th Vice President of India, a position that places him second in the line of succession to the President. Recently, Dhankhar came into spotlight after the Vice President drew parallels between Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the father of the nation as "mahapurush" of the last century and PM Modi as “yugpurush" of this century. He called them “two great personalities" while focusing on common things between them. Dhankhar's comments drew criticism from the opposition and others on social media. Responding to Dhankhar's remarks, Congress MP Manickam Tagore posted on social media platform X,"If you compare with Mahatma it's shameful Sir, we all know there is a limit to sycophancy now you have crossed that limit, and to be in your chair & position and to be a sycophant does not add value Sir. With respect @VPIndia."
