Jaswant Singh BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 08 Jan 2025
Jaswant Singh (3 January 1938 - 27 September 2020): A BJP Veteran's Legacy Jaswant Singh, a prominent figure in Indian politics, served as a cabinet minister and a long-standing parliamentarian. A founding member of the BJP, his nearly continuous parliamentary career (1980-2014), spanned both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. His political career was marked by holding key ministerial portfolios under the Vajpayee government, including Finance, External Affairs, and Defence. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. His diplomatic efforts following India's 1998 nuclear tests, notably his dialogue with the US, yielded positive outcomes. Singh's tenure was not without controversy. His post-2009 critique of the BJP's electoral performance and his book containing sympathetic views on Jinnah led to his marginalization within the party. His subsequent independent candidacy in 2014 resulted in his expulsion from the BJP. A significant health setback in 2014, involving a serious head injury, left him in a coma until his death in 2020. Despite the controversies, his extensive experience and unique distinction of holding the three key ministerial portfolios remain significant contributions to Indian politics. His political legacy is one of both significant achievement and internal party conflict.
