Mahindra & Mahindra: A Legacy of Diversification Founded in 1945 as Mahindra & Mohammed by the Mahindra brothers and Malik Ghulam Muhammad, the company initially traded steel in Ludhiana. Following India's partition, Ghulam Muhammad departed, and the firm, renamed Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948, leveraged its steel expertise to secure a contract manufacturing Willys Jeeps. Listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange by 1956, the company transitioned into a significant exporter of utility vehicles and parts by 1969. Navigating the Licence Raj, Mahindra & Mahindra diversified, establishing a tractor division in 1982 and a technology arm (now Tech Mahindra) in 1986. A 1994 restructuring created six Strategic Business Units, encompassing automotive, farm equipment, infrastructure, and financial services, reflecting the group's expanding portfolio. Under Anand Mahindra's leadership, a new logo in 2000 and the launch of the Scorpio in 2002 marked a pivotal moment.
