Sharma’s lawyer Chandan Shekhawat on Thursday approached the special court in Mumbai to complete the bail formalities. The court allowed him to furnish provisional cash bail and he is likely to be released on Friday from Yerwada Central Jail where he was lodged.

Earlier, Sharma had been arrested in connection with the ‘Lakhkhan Bhaiyya’ fake encounter case of 2006 in which a Sessions Court acquitted him. In 2008, the Maharashtra government dismissed Sharma from the force for alleged nexus with the underworld.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh, representing the NIA, had opposed the plea, stating that Pradeep Sharma was the main conspirator in the 'cold-blooded murder' of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran, who was considered a 'weak link' in the larger conspiracy of terrorising industrialist Mukesh Ambani's family.

The report was sought by the court after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) made an application before the court claiming that Sharma, who is lodged at Sassoon Hospital, is staying there without authorisation, in violation of prison rules.
