She was born on May 5, 1949, in Lalganj, Vaishali, Bihar. Her husband, the late Brij Bihari Parsad, was also a prominent politician and was affiliated with Rashtriya Janta Dal.

Her political career also started under the Rashtriya Janata Dal banner, as she won the 1999 Lok Sabha elections from the Motihari Lok Sabha seat. She later shifted her allegiance to Bhartiya Janata Party. She first won the Lok Sabha elections on BJP ticket in 2009 from Seohar Lok Sabha seat. The masses of her constituency welcomed her governance as she went on to defend her seat in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
