Born in 1960, Bandyopadhyay's political journey began in student politics. He rose through the ranks within the AITC, holding various organizational positions, including the party's state general secretary. This dedication led him to contest the Kolkata Uttar assembly seat in 1996, marking the beginning of his electoral success.

He went on to win five consecutive assembly elections from the same constituency, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Kolkata politics. In 2014, he transitioned to national politics, winning the Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha seat for the AITC. He has been re-elected three times since then, showcasing his enduring support from the electorate.

As an MP, Bandyopadhyay has championed issues concerning Kolkata's development. He advocates for improved infrastructure, better healthcare facilities, and educational opportunities within his constituency. He has also been vocal about preserving Kolkata's unique cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development initiatives.
