Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, fondly known as T. R. Baalu, is a stalwart in the Indian political landscape. Born on December 13, 1941, in Thalikottai, Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu, his political journey began at the tender age of sixteen when he joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party.

His official date of birth is recorded as June 15 due to confusion at the time of his birth. He completed his B.Sc. from New College, Madras University, and later pursued a diploma in drafting engineering drawings from Central Polytechnic, Chennai.

His parliamentary career is marked by his representation of the Sriperumbudur constituency near Chennai. He has been elected six times since 1996 from Chennai South and Sriperumbudur, from which he also won the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He served as the Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Non-Conventional Energy Sources from 1996 to 1998. Later, he had the Minister of Environment and Forests portfolio from 1999 to 2003. From 2004 to 2009, he served as the Minister for Road Transport, Highways, and Shipping.

His leadership within the DMK party is noteworthy. He served as the Principal Secretary of the DMK Party from August 2018 to January 20201. Currently, he holds the position of Treasurer of DMK, a role he assumed in September 2020.

Defamation case: TN BJP chief Annamalai appears before court, later says part 2 of ‘DMK Files’ will be out soon

The BJP leader had in May released the 'DMK Files' wherein he made graft allegations against the leaders of the party including Chief Minister M K Stalin, his son and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other key members of the party. Party treasurer Baalu subsequently filed a case against him and the XVII Metropolitan Magistrate directed Annamalai to appear before the court on July 14.
