SIP contributions at record high in Mar as MF AUMs rise 5% in FY23

Contributions to systematic investment plans (SIP), in which investors make regular payments into mutual funds, touched a record high of Rs 14,276.06 crore in March 2023 as compared to Rs 13,688.2 crore in February, according to the data released by Association of Mutual Fund (AMFI).

This came as the assets under management (AUM) of the industry grew by 5 per cent to Rs 39.42 lakh crore in the fiscal ended March 2023 compared to Rs 37.56 lakh crore as on March 31, 2022.

The data showed that the number of women investors in the last three years increased from 46.98 lakh in December 2019 to 74.49 lakh in December 2022.

During March 2023, while equity mutual funds witnessed net inflows of Rs 20,534.21 crore, debt-oriented funds saw net outflows of Rs 56,884.13 crore.

“India and its growing investor base, continues to put faith in the equity markets via the mutual funds route,” AMFI’s Chief Executive N S Venkatesh said.

Within equity funds sectoral/thematic funds saw highest inflows of Rs 3,928.97 crore. Net investments in dividend yield fund stood at Rs 3,715.75 crore. Inflows in mid cap and small cap funds stood at Rs 2,128.93 crore and Rs 2,430.04 crore respectively. Investment in ELSS equity schemes were to the tune of Rs 2,685.58 crore.

The outflows in debt mutual fund increased compared to February despite inflows of Rs 31,000 crore in the last week of March various debt funds including medium and long duration, corporate bond and PSU bond after the government announced to withdraw the benefits of indexation for calculation of long-term capital gains (LTCG) on debt mutual funds, effective April 1, 2023.

Among debt funds, liquid funds saw the maximum outflows of Rs 56,924.13 crore. Outflows from money market funds stood at Rs 11,421.65 crore and from ultra short duration funds was Rs 10,280.76 crore.

The number of SIP accounts stood at 6,35,99,116 in March 2023 compared to 6,28,26,035 in February 2023.

The data further showed that the number of women investors who invested in mutual funds from T30 cities increased by 9.05 lakh to 41.66 lakh as of December 2022 from 32.60 in December 2021.
