Three more people have died from suspected leptospirosis while four more cases have been detected since Tuesday,health authorities said on Thursday.

The latest figures have brought the death toll from the bacterial infection this season to six,and the number of infections to 31.

All the cases have been reported from the southern parts of the state,which has witnessed more rain than most other regions.

Leptospirosis is caused by the leptospira bacteria found in water mixed with urine of domestic animals and rodents.

The state health department has been treating the issue as “high priority”. It has distributed more than one lakh capsules of antibiotics in the affected areas.

In 2011,916 infections were detected that led to 176 deaths.
