Seeking demarcation of the area around every government primary school as per the Right to Education Act (RTE) in order to eradicate child labour, the Child Rights Collective Gujarat (CRCG) with the CACL – Campaign Against Child Labour – on Sunday launched a campaign that will continue for 44 days.
While CRCG is a child rights group, the CACL is a nationwide network of organisations working on the issue of child labour.
Addressing a press briefing, Sukhdev Patel, founder of non-profit Ganatar, said, “It is mandatory as per RTE Act to demarcate all government schools which is still not done13 years after the implementation of the Act.”
“Under the rules, it is necessary to update the data of children below 18 years of age in the demarcated area every year which comes under the responsibility of the Panchayat Department. How many children are actually in school because of this action not being taken? Or how many children are being employed? No supporting information is available. If these details are available, there is a possibility of all children getting enrolled in schools,” Patel added.
Further, questioning the data available, he stated there is no basis for the enrollment and drop-out data provided by the government.
Adding to this, sociologist and former vice-chancellor of Bhavnagar University Vidyut Joshi attributed the merging of informal markets as one of the major reasons for an increase in child labour.
A strategy for realising the Right to Education Act, and constitutional and fundamental rights of universal primary education, was considered for tackling the issue of child labour.
