Surat Rural police have arrested four persons from Kadod village in Bardoli taluka and seized counterfeit currency notes worth Rs 8 lakh from them.
Two of the four arrested hail from Kerala.
Acting on a tip-off,a police team raided their hideout in Kadod village on Thursday night. Besides fake currency notes,police also seized printed papers,a computer,scanner and a printer.
The four arrested have been identified as Salim Multani,Narendra Mistry from Kadod,and Anis Vasu and Satish Mohan from Kerala.
Police said that Salim Multani was arrested by Kadod police after his wife committed suicide in 2007. While he was lodged in Surat sub-jail in 2006,Salim met one Nasir there and the two became friends. Both got bail in 2008.
Superintendent of Police Piyush Patel said,We recovered embossed dye that they used to print Gandhijis portrait on 500-rupee denomination notes. The main suspect,Nasir,is still at large. He used to stay in neighbouring Palsana taluka and was into saree trade. All the printing material and embossed fibre dye was brought from Kerala around 15 days ago. So far,they have not been able to circulate the notes in the market.
