Garbage threatens proposed heritage site at Dandi

The much-touted eco-tourism-cum-heritage site proposed at Dandi village is in danger of being swamped by mounds of garbage.

The much-touted eco-tourism-cum-heritage site proposed at Dandi village is in danger of being swamped by mounds of garbage.

“God only knows where it all comes from,” lamented a senior official who is part of the project.

As the funding agency, the World Bank, made it clear there was no question of burning the garbage, certainly not in the eco-tourism area and nowhere else either, the project officials decided a landfill site would solve the problem.

A landfill at Navsari city was suggested then dropped — transporting garbage regularly along the 20 km highway would cost too much in the long run.

A landfill inside the eco-tourism area was then suggested, but that was protested by the villagers. However, the project proponents are sticking to the idea.

“It’s going to take some more time to convince them (villagers) a landfill site isn’t going to spell doom for them,” said an official from one of the implementing agencies, preferring not to be identified.

Another senior official working with another of the involved agencies said the beaches were cleaned up just once — to ready the area for the visit of a foreign dignitary last year.
