The latest figures from Household Consumer Expenditure Survey,conducted by the National Sample Survey (NSSO) for 2011-12,show that Gujarat households spend more than any other in the country on edible oil.
On an average,an urban Gujarati spends Rs 100 per month on edible oil,which is the highest monthly per capita expenditure of oil in the country. Jammu & Kashmir with an expenditure of Rs 81 per month comes second,while Maharashtra (Rs 79),West Bengal (Rs 71) and Delhi (Rs 70) are among the top five states where the expenditure on edible oil is the highest.
The situation is pretty much similar in rural areas of the country. Even among the villages,Gujarat tops all the states with a monthly expenditure of Rs 89 on edible oil,which is just a few notches below the spending in urban areas of the state.
According to Gujarat Health Department figures,there were almost 16,000 medically certified deaths caused by heart ailments in Gujarat in 2011. Among cities,Ahmedabad topped the list with over 4,300 deaths. Oil consumption in the diet of Gujaratis is nothing new. But,with the rise in sedentary lifestyle of people,the number of heart ailments have increased, said Dr Bipinchandra Patel,honorary secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA),Gujarat.
