Gujarat Assembly is set to go digital and paperless from the Monsoon Session of the House, scheduled to be held from September 13 to 15, under the Union government’s National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) of Digital India initiative. For this, the desks of all MLAs have been fitted with Apple iPads equipped with NeVA.

Speaker Shankar Chaudhary on Tuesday launched a training workshop for all the members of the Assembly. Maintaining that Gujarat Assembly was entering into a digital era, the Speaker said that the project has been devised following a lot of effort, in which ministers, MLAs and experts of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, have provided valuable inputs.

He added that with this project, MLAs can mark their presence digitally from the iPads on their desk. “There is no need for MLAs to mark their presence on paper now. They can also give various notices through this system. Question can be asked online and whether an answer has been approved or not, will also be available online. Moreover, who is speaking and for how long will be available on the screen. Even voting on various issues will be done digitally,” Chaudhary said.

“The systems have been connected with the iris of the respective MLAs. So, no other MLA will be able to access or use it,” he added. Chaudhary further said that all MLAs would be provided with one more iPad, which they can use to practice at home.

The Speaker said that he wants to enable the iPads with Artificial Intelligence to help the MLAs get data about their respective constituencies. He added that considering Opposition parties as the “younger brothers” of the ruling party, the Assembly has started training of Opposition MLAs first, to be followed by ruling party MLAs.

The event to launch the training session was attended by senior Congress MLAs like Amit Chavda, Shailesh Parmar and Arjun Modhwadia. Welcoming the initiative, Parmar said that Gujarat Assembly has become the eighth Assembly in the country to use the digital technology.
