Kodnani charge: Jethmalani defends Sibal

Former Union minister and noted Supreme Court lawyer Ram Jethmalani has come out in defence of Congress leader Kapil Sibal over the allegations levelled against him by BJP’s Maya Kodnani.

Former Union minister and noted Supreme Court lawyer Ram Jethmalani has come out in defence of Congress leader Kapil Sibal over the allegations levelled against him by BJP’s Maya Kodnani.

Kodnani,an accused in the 2002 Naroda Gam and Naroda Patiya riot cases, had said on Saturday that Sibal had got the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted with an aim to “defame Gujarat and tarnish its image”.

Reacting to this,Jethmalani said on Sunday,“I know Kapil Sibal personally. He will not do such a thing.” He was speaking on the sidelines of a function.

He,however, refused to answer further queries, saying,“Do not ask me questions pertaining to Maya Kodnani,as my son had appeared for the minister concerned.”

Incidentally, his son Mahesh Jethmalani, who is also a senior Supreme Court advocate, had also blasted the SIT investigations while appearing for Kodnani in the Gujarat High Court in March this year. He had contended that the probe was full of contradictions and inconsistencies.

Kodnani,a former minister in the Modi government, had alleged that the SIT falsely implicated her at the behest of senior Congress leaders Sibal and Ahmed Patel. “Sibal and Patel want to dent Gujarat’s progressive image and want to stall its development,” she had claimed.

Meanwhile, though the father-son duo clearly seem to be divided on Kodnani’s allegations, they appear to be on the same dais as far as Mahesh’s candidature as a BJP nominee from north-central Mumbai constituency is concerned. Endorsing his son’s nomination,Jethmalani said he would campaign for him.
