NaMo means business in Gujarat

Surat-born NRI Ammeet Desai,in the mobile assembling business for a decade,calls Smart NaMo a ‘walk in the park’. The phones will be pre-loaded with apps on BJP and Modi. “We wanted to support the growth model campaign of Modi. Hence,we formed a company,Smart Namo H K Pvt Ltd,four months ago and launched 32 models of mobile phones. We are in talks with the Gujarat government to put up an assembly unit for manufacturing mobile phones in Gandhinagar by year-end and export them,” says Desai.

Chairman of Gujarat Khadi Gramudyog Board Vadibhai Patel says,“We are in discussions about ‘Narendra Modi Kurta’ and how it will be marketed. We plan to have Modi kurta as part of our exhibition in December in Ahmedabad. It is a product like Khadi denim jeans,designed to attract youth to Khadi.”

In May,Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga,a former BJP youth leader,sold 3,000 Modi T-shirts through Facebook. He followed up with coffee mugs,badges,which he circulated in Delhi’s 40 colleges.

Brand Consultant Santosh Desai says,“There is an ‘inbuilt-fatigue’ in any story which is media-driven as once the story loses steam,people tend to move on. While it is unfair to say Modi is media creation,there is only a certain news value he will be able to achieve. There is a real danger to Modi enjoying this huge fan-following months before the real test,the Lok Sabha elections.”
