The police have begun a probe against the rector of a hostel located on Parul University campus, who, in connivance with a student, allegedly cheated the university of Rs 31.9 lakh via cryptocurrency trade.

The FIR, lodged at Waghodia police station on July 9, on the basis of a complaint filed by Parul University employee Aashusinh Rajput, stated that rector Pawan Babulal Tanwar misled students seeking accommodation to transfer the hostel fees of Rs 96,000 per student to his private account.

Tanwar – a native of Bhiwani in Haryana, who was appointed as rector of floors B 5 and 6 of the Sardar Bhavan hostel – allegedly connived with student Manthan Govind Gohil, a native of Gir Somnath, to indulge in crypto currency trade by using the amount gathered from the students, the FIR stated.

In his complaint, Rajput has stated, “Pawan Tanwar, despite being aware that he has to collect the fees towards hostel accommodation from the students and deposit it into the account of the university, misused his position and lured 47 students to deposit the hostel fees in his private bank account between February 27 and July 7, 2024, instead of depositing the amount to the bank account of the university. A major sum of this money was also transferred to the bank account of a student of the university, Manthan Gohil, and exhausted.”

According to the FIR, the swindled amount, close to Rs 31.9 lakh, was discovered when the management made inquiries about payment of fees towards hostel accommodation, which did not reflect in the university system. The FIR stated that it has emerged during the preliminary inquiry conducted by the university that Tanwar allegedly transferred huge amounts of money to the account of Gohil, who indulged in crypto trading.

The FIR has been lodged under sections 408 (clerk or servant entrusted with property commits criminal breach of trust), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 114 (crime committed in presence of abettor) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as the alleged offence is said to have occurred between February 27 and June 30, when IPC was in force in the country.
