Protests break out against police,authorities’ failure

Anger spilled out on streets in the city on the third day of hooch tragedy,with local residents protesting against the police and government’s inability to curb bootlegging in the state. Irate residents vandalised seven buses in Odhav,Viratnagar and Amraiwadi areas and pelted stones at police vans.

An Assistant Sub Inspector in Odhav police sustained minor injuries in stone pelting that took place near Odhav fire station on Thursday morning. Another incident about minor stone pelting at police team was reported from Kharicut canal area in Odhav. No one,however,was injured in the incident.

The residents of Odhav had called for a bandh on Thursday to protest against the authorities’ inability to prevent the tragedy in which a large number of people from the area died after consuming spurious hooch over the past two days.

The angry residents staged demonstrations and burnt effigies of state Home Minister Amit Shah at Viratnagar and Thakkar Bapa Nagar. Led by local political leaders,the residents blocked roads and staged protests shouting anti-government slogans. A tight police bandobast was put on place in Odhav since Wednesday night,fearing trouble during the bandh.

Similar demonstrations were staged throughout the day in Naroda,Amraiwadi and Ramol areas. Police resorted to mild lathi charge to put situation under control and detained a total of 78 persons (11 from Odhav,23 from Naroda,34 from Amraiwadi and 10 from Ramol) as a preventive measure.
