After government school teachers, now faculty members of government colleges in the state are under Education department’s scanner. In order to evaluate performance of government college teachers, the Education department, for the first time, has sought data of last three years’ results of individual teachers which will decide their appraisals.

While recently, more than 150 government school teachers faced the axe for poor results in Class X state board examination, the Education department is preparing to take a similar action against “non-performing” government college teachers. This would apply to all 72 government colleges, including Arts,Commerce and Science.

Confirming the decision by the department,Principal Secretary (Education) A M Tiwari said,“In academic field, there is no other parameter to evaluate a teacher’s performance other than students’ results. The objective of seeking last three years’ results of colleges is to check whether teachers are performing or not.”

This move by the Education department, which is in a process of overhauling school as well as higher education standards across the state,is also aimed at creating a sense of responsibility among college teachers and make them answerable to what they teach.

However, action to be taken against “non-performing” college teachers is yet to be decided by the department; it is expected that it will take a similar action which was taken against school teachers.
