Armed with hammers and iron rods, students reached closed Chhatrapati Shivaji Marathi School on Friday evening to reopen it after it was sealed by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on the order of the Gujarat High Court, as it was built on a common open plot located at Jalaramnagar society at Udhna.
The students, over 25 in number, managed to open the seal of SMC but failed to break the lock on the main gate. The police, which rushed to the spot, eventually managed to stop the students. Following this, the Surat district education officer assured that the students will be accommodated in nearby schools.
The police said that over 900 students studied in the five-storey Marathi medium school that was built on the common open plot of the residential society in 1989. The school offered classes till Class 12.
SMC executive engineer of Udhna zone, Sujal Prajapati, said that in 2017, the Jalaramnagar society had moved HC against the school. Last year, the court directed the SMC to listen to both the parties and find an amicable solution.
“We conducted regular meetings between both parties… We asked the school trustee for land documents, building use certificate and others, but till date have not submitted any such document. In March this year, we decided to seal the school. On the last day of Board exams, we told the school management to shift important documents to some other place but they did not act on it. We then sealed the school in April,” he added.
When contacted, Principal Jagdish Pandi said, “Over 900 students study in our school.. their education has been affected. Parents are asking for school leaving certificates but we are helpless, as the school is shut and no work can be undertaken… The school management or teaching staff is not involved in Friday’s incident.”
District Education Officer Bhagirathsinh Parmar said, “Parents want to shift their children to other schools but with no school leaving certificate being provided by the school, they cannot do much. On Monday, we will request the SMC to allow the principal and school staffers to collect registers and other documents so that they could handover school leaving certificates to students. We will also help to get the students admitted to nearby schools.”
