Head constable killed, 4 others injured in Surat accident

A 40-year-old head constable was killed and four others, including three cops were injured on Thursday morning after a Rajkot local crime branch (LCB) team on their way back, along with a murder convict, met with an accident in Surat.

The deceased, identified as Digvijaysinh Rathod, was attached to Rajkot Rural LCB. The injured were identified as head constables Ghanshyamsinh Jadeja, Arvindsinh Jadeja, Divyesh Suva and murder convict Vijay alias Vajo Kanji Parmar.

Surat Rural superintendent of police (SP) Hitesh Joysor said that the accident took place between 5:30 and 6 am near Nana Borsara village on National Highway 48, some 55 km north of Surat under the Kosamba police station jurisdiction.

“An unidentified vehicle hit the LCB team’s car from behind. Consequently, the police team’s car rammed into a truck-trailer and turned turtle,” Joysor told The Indian Express, adding, “The four head constables suffered serious injuries in the accident and one of them succumbed while being taken to a hospital.”

The SP further said that an investigation has been launched into the incident. “We have identified the truck-trailer involved in the accident. Efforts are on to trace the unidentified vehicle which hit the car from behind and sped away,” he said.
