Surat diamond traders and builders hailing from Saurashtra have come together to help cattle-rearers in scarcity-hit seven districts of the region. The traders have decided to give their agricultural land in Surat and its neighbouring districts for cultivation of green fodder to be supplied to pastoralists and farmers in Saurashtra.
The Saurashtra Jaldhara Trust (SJT),comprising real estate developers,textile and diamond traders,has recently formed Pashudhan Bachao Committee to look into the issue of shortage of fodder for cattle in Junagadh,Jamnagar,Surendranagar,Rajkot,Bhavnagar,Porbandar and Amreli.
The committee has 111 members who are doing business in Surat and belong to different districts of Saurashtra. Each member has been asked to form a panel of 111 representatives of different villages from each taluka.
SJT president Mathur Savani said,There are many Saurashtrian who own agricultural land in Surat and other south Gujarat districts. They have shown eagerness to give their land for cultivation of maize and fodder. We are hopeful of getting up to 50,000 hectares of agricultural land in south Gujarat. We have 2,000 workers who are expert in farming and they will be given the work. We have also decided to purchase standing crops from sugarcane growers at minimum price.
Savani said they have started contacting various taluka officials to find out how many cattle are there in their respective areas. Our taluka level committees will also collect data of cattle in their areas. We have decided to give green fodder to farmers at the minimum price, he said.
