The Gujarat government which began procuring Kharif crops at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) on Saturday said it would purchase 11.51 lakh metric tonnes of agricultural produce this year despite the low registration by farmers.
“The process of buying agricultural produce on MSP has begun today across the state. Groundnut, soybean, green gram (moong dal), and urad dal have begun to be purchased. This year as the prices in the open market are good, the number of farmers who have registered to sell their produce as per MSP is low. We are however happy about it as our farmers are getting better prices in open market,” said Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel at the old Agricultural Produce Marketing Company (APMC) in Rajkot.
“Currently Gujarat State Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd (GUJCOMASOL) will be buying groundnut as per MSP, while an FPO Indi Agro will be buying soya bean, moong dal and urad dal. They will open outlets for procurement,” Patel told reporters.
The state government later stated that over 11.51 lakh metric tonnes of Kharif crops will be purchased on MSP this year which include, 9.98 lakh metric tonnes of groundnut, 91,343 metric tonnes of soya bean, 9,000 metric tonnes of moong dal and 53,000 metric tonnes of urad dal.
As of October 16, a total of 35,585 farmers have registered themselves to sell groundnuts as per MSP. Similarly, 23,316 soybean farmers, 95 moong dal farmers, and 62 urad dal farmers have also registered with the government. The government had extended the registration process till October 31.
For purchasing Kharif crops on MSP, 160 centres have been decided for groundnut, 73 for moong dal, 105 for urad dal, and 97 for Soyabean. These centres will be opened within APMCs in different regions.
