Thousands throng Sardar Sarovar Dam site at Kevadiya

Thousands of tourists from Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh thronged Kevadiya here to enjoy the sight of an overflowing Narmada river and other places at the Sardar Sarovar Dam site.

Thousands of tourists from Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh thronged Kevadiya here to enjoy the sight of an overflowing Narmada river and other places at the Sardar Sarovar Dam site.

Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are among the beneficiaries of the Rs 40,000-crore multipurpose dam,whose foundation stone was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in April 1961.

Taking advantage of the long weekend the visitors thronged the site,about 90km from here. In fact,several Muslim and Jain families preferred to celebrate their respective festivals,Eid and Jain Samvatsary,at the dam site rather than going to any other tourist site.

Bountiful rain in catchment areas of Madhya Pradesh has led the river to overflow for the second year in a row.

S Namdev,a Mumbai resident who visited the site with his family,said: “It was really a beautiful sight.”

Shamsad Banu from Ahmedabad said “we decided to visit the place to celebrate Eid and we enjoyed it.”

Besides Narmada,two Lord Shiva temples,Nehru foundation stone spot and a wildlife sanctuary are some of the tourist attractions at Kevadiya.

Water had started flowing into the dam in 1987 after Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress Government had given environment clearance to the controversial project
