Umiya festival returns after long,over 30 lakh visit in three days

As many as 30 lakh visitors have attended the Umiya Mahotsav in the first three days of the festival at Unjha in Mehsana district.

As many as 30 lakh visitors have attended the Umiya Mahotsav in the first three days of the festival at Unjha in Mehsana district. The five-day festival is being held from November 28 to December 2.

The festival is normally organised after every 25 years,but is being held after a gap of 33 years this time. When it was last held in 1976,1.3 million people had attended it.

The funds collected from the festival will be used for setting up better facilities for the Patidar Samaj in Ahmedabad.

Festival spokesman Manish Changela said,“The objective of the festival is to make people aware about the educational and social development that has taken place and the development that we are planning.”

He added: “We are planning hostel facilities for the students and are also having seminars for farmers. We plan to inform them about new technologies in farming.”

About 2.5 lakh people from the samaj are living in Ahmedabad. The trust has sent invites to 8,60,000 samaj members worldwide.

The festival has around 1,000 yagna kunds that have been constructed at a cost of over Rs 200 crore.

Changela said the people will be provided shelter and food along with other amenities during the festival. “We have already touched the 30 lakh figure in the first three days of the festival. We will achieve our target of around 45 lakh visitors in the next two days,” he added.
