Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria also asked the students to develop a global outlook, study international law and comparative jurisprudence to meet the challenges of a globalised legal world. (File photo)“Embrace technology thoughtfully, using it as a tool and not letting it override human judgment,” Supreme Court judge Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria told students of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) Gandhinagar Tuesday. He was speaking at the concluding session of the university’s two-day orientation event, held for the upcoming batches of its undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes.
Justice Anjaria also asked the students to develop a global outlook, study international law and comparative jurisprudence to meet the challenges of a globalised legal world.
Justice Anjaria reminded students that law is a dynamic and living enterprise that demands critical engagement and a commitment to serve society. “In practising law, you will certainly gain expertise, but the greater challenge is to cultivate ethical commitment in every professional activity,” he remarked.
He also highlighted five key values for aspiring lawyers. First, a personal and professional commitment to ethics and morality, stressing that law is a noble vocation, not a means to amass wealth. Second, unwavering constitutional fidelity, ensuring actions are guided by constitutional morality and the protection of citizens’ rights. Third, a dedication to social justice and inclusiveness, serving the marginalized and underrepresented.
Gauhati High Court judge Justice Manish Choudhury also spoke during the valedictory session.
Justice Choudhury, addressing the students, described the next five years as a transformative journey. “These years will test your critical thinking, sharpen your advocacy skills, and teach you the importance of collaboration and empathy,” he said. He encouraged students to take part in academic discussions, campus societies, and internships to develop both professional and life skills.
Justice Choudhury emphasised that success in law requires a strong academic foundation, practical experience, specialization in emerging legal fields, and above all, unwavering integrity. “Law is a calling dedicated to justice, equality, and service to society,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, GNLU Director Prof S Shanthakumar reminded students of the noble purpose of their academic journey. He said, “You are stepping into a noble profession. The law is not just about arguments and judgments. It is about justice, fairness, and compassion. It is about using knowledge to solve problems, uphold rights, and shape a better society.”
