Students of the tabla department of the Faculty of Performing Arts of MS University in Vadodara paid a tribute to tabla maestro Zakir Hussain by observing a minute of silence here on Monday.

Padma Vibhushan Hussain, who passed away due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in the U S, had visited the faculty in December 2015 and interacted with the students.

Professor Gaurang Bhavsar, the Dean of Music College, said, “Zakir Hussain Sahab was a great tabla player and represented the Punjab Gharana. He had the styles of all gharanas of Tabla. His death has left his family, the country and music lovers in deep mourning. His sudden demise is a great loss to the music world…”

Bhavsar further said, “When he visited Vadodara in 2015, a student had asked him to share the most important part of singing and music. He had replied that doing ‘riyaz’ is the karma of an artiste. One must not focus on success as much as riyaz. He was a simple person and never allowed anyone to pick up his tablas when he came on the stage.”
