The VMC has finally got the possession of about 60,000 square metres land, which partly belonged to the royal family, for the construction of the bridge between Akota and Dandia bazaar. On Friday, the VMC took possession of the land for the much-hyped project, which is worth Rs 50 crore. Senior civic officials said the construction work would begin soon.

“Residents of about 300 hutments on the Dandia Bazaar side have already vacated the land following a notice issued by the VMC. There are some hutments on the Akota side, which are still occupied. We would wait till Sunday and if they don’t shift to other places,we would initiate the demolition process on Monday as the formal procedure to acquire the land is complete,” said J H Parnami,Land and Estate Officer at VMC.

It was in September 2009 when the VMC had first acquired the land for the Lalbaugh bridge. The state Revenue Department had first issued a notice to the Royal family. Following which, acquisition took place.

The department had issued a notice on September 20,2009,saying the plot, which is part of the Laxmivilas Palace compound,is required for the widening of the road that is part of the Lalbaugh Rail Overbridge project.
