VMC to sow grains to prevent silting on Vishwamitri banks

After the futile exercise of sowing grass on the slopes of the pathway on both sides of Vishwamitri river to prevent silting, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation authorities have now decided to plant grains on the entire pathway.

VMC officials had earlier planted grass to prevent the silting of the land happening due to water currents. But the idea did not work as heavy rains on Wednesday washed out everything. The heavy water flow damaged even the pathway at several spots.

Cleaning up and re-sectioning of the Vishwamitri river is one of the major projects launched by the VMC. The plan is to create riverfront on the model of Sabarmati Riverfront project in Ahmedabad. Moreover, there is also a plan to have Crocodile Park considering the large number of crocodiles in the river.

Speaking to Newsline,Vadodara Mayor Balkrishna Shukla said,“It is true that the pathway is damaged at some places and even the grass which we had planted earlier is damaged. To prevent further land silting,we have decided to plant five different grains including jawar, bajra, wheat and paddy. These are fast growing crops and it would not take more than five days for sprouting.”

Importantly, the amount spent on making the pathway literally went in drain after heavy rains on Wednesday. The pathway was damaged at Bhimnath Bridge,in Sayaji Baug Zoo,near VUDA circle,at Harni.

When asked whether VMC would make any changes in the existing pathway,Shukla said,“Nobody had thought of the kind of water inflow at a time leading to sudden rise in the water level. The seven-inch rain in a few hours has actually taught us a lot of lessons. The pathway height will now be increased to about 1.5 meters from the existing pathway.”

He said the re-sectioning process has helped in effecting quick outflow of the water.
