Opposition Congress on Wednesday raised the issue of alleged parading of a woman accused of defaming Amreli BJP MLA Kaushik Vekariya through a forged letter as it questioned why the FSL report in the case was still not out. In reply, the government said that action will certainly be taken against the persons responsible on the basis of a report.

The issue was raised by Congress legislative party leader Amit Chavda during the discussion on the budgetary demands of Home department in the state Assembly. Chavda alleged that Amreli police carried out a varghodo (public parading) of a young woman. He alleged that the woman became a victim of internal disputes within the BJP there.

Chavda asked why the FSL report on the impugned forged letter is not out yet. He also asked reasons behind not making public an inquiry report of senior IPS officer Nirlipt Rai in the episode.

In his reply, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi made a counter allegation and said that the Congress was raising the issue for political gains. He said that action has been taken against policemen in the case and further action will also be “certainly taken” on the basis of the inquiry report. Sanghavi termed the raising of the issue as a ploy to prevent progress of his fellow member Vekariya.

The matter is related to a letter, allegedly accusing Vekariya of corruption, going viral on social media in the last week of December 2024.

The purported letter was written on the letterhead of Taluka Panchayat Chairman Kishore Kanpariya and bore his handwritten signature, which was alleged to be fake. An FIR of forgery was registered in the case.
