Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar Thursday stated that even God would not be able to transform Bengaluru overnight, emphasising the need for long-term, well-planned urban development to ensure the city’s sustainability.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Namma Raste – Design Workshop’ and the launch of a Traffic Laboratory at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s central office, Shivakumar said, “It is impossible to change Bengaluru overnight. Even if God Himself descended, it wouldn’t be possible. However, if we draft proper plans and implement them effectively, transformation is achievable.”

He said the government aims to establish standardised designs for all bus stops, metro pillars, and traffic junctions, ensuring consistency across the city.

The handbook introduced at the workshop, he added, will provide clear guidelines on tree planting along roads, placement of streetlights, pedestrian infrastructure, and traffic discipline.

Namma Raste-2025 will feature workshops, exhibitions of various transportation systems, and conferences on February 20, 21, and 22. This program has been designed to find solutions for the development of roads, footpaths, and traffic congestion control with the coordination of various departments under one roof.

The event will highlight different mobility aspects including walkability, non-motorised transport (NMT), and road infrastructure, demonstrating how robust data can inform better urban planning.

Directive to remove overhead cables

Shivakumar also announced a strict directive to remove all overhead cable wires in the city and replace them with an underground network. “We waited long enough for cable operators to make alternative arrangements. Now, we have issued a strict order to cut all overhead cables. Once they are removed, they will automatically find a solution,” he said.

Challenges in tunnel-road construction

Addressing the challenges linked to the ambitious 18 km-long Hebbal-Silk Board tunnel road project, Shivakumar said, “The construction of tunnel roads involves many challenges, including land acquisition, financial constraints, and technical issues. Due to these complexities, tenders have not yet been called.”

However, he noted that a double-decker metro system has been implemented in new corridors, though it was not feasible in existing metro routes.

The government, he added, is laying 1,700 km of white-topping roads, which are expected to last for the next 30 years, along with new roads near stormwater drains and elevated corridor projects.

A blueprint for Bengaluru’s future

Comparing the ‘Namma Raste’ handbook to the Indian Constitution, Shivakumar said it would serve as a roadmap for Bengaluru’s long-term development.

“Our Constitution, drafted by Dr B R Ambedkar has shaped our nation. Similarly, the ‘Namma Raste’ handbook will guide the future of Bengaluru,” he said.

He also revealed that suggestions from various organisations, students, and youth would be documented and showcased on a dedicated website to ensure broader participation in urban planning.

Responding to media queries, Shivakumar addressed concerns about the declining use of Kannada in Bengaluru, asserting that Kannada is not disappearing.

“I was the first to mandate a 60:40 ratio for Kannada and English signage. If anyone violates this, action will be taken. Kannada is our life, our breath, and our identity,” he stated.
