MUDA scam, Cauvery issue expected to dominate Karnataka Assembly’s Monsoon Session
Amidst two scandals rocking the Karnataka Government, the BJP and JD(S) are gearing up to challenge the ruling Congress in the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature starting Monday. The contentious Cauvery issue is also poised to take centre stage.
Former scheduled tribes welfare minister B Nagendra was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on July 12 in connection with the scam involving the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. Bengaluru has long been a hub for rail transportation, with the outlying villages and small towns around the city often relying on the railway network for commutes or other travel. This was no less true before Independence, when the area was under the rule of the princely state of Mysore.
While public-private partnerships are now common, this railway was perhaps one of the earliest examples of such partnership, having been completed in 1918 in association with the Mysore State Railway. Uniquely, several heritage railway stations built at this time are still operational. The original railway on this route operated on a narrow gauge.
Railway expert and former IAS officer T R Raghunandan said the narrow-gauge line used to run until the late 1970s.
Following an all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday, the Karnataka government said it would release 8,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) last week had directed the state to release one TMC water (11,000 cusecs) per day to Tamil Nadu till July 31.
“The overall opinion of all party leaders is that one TMC water cannot be released daily,” Siddaramaiah told reporters. Apart from Leader of Opposition R Ashok, former CM D V Sadananda Gowda and legislators from the Cauvery command area attended the meeting held on Sunday.
“The Krishnarajasagar dam (KRS) is only 54 per cent full. Water levels at all dams of Cauvery basin (KRS, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathy) is 63 per cent of their full capacity,” the CM said. Following the CWMA decision last week, the Karnataka government has decided to appeal the same.
