JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy urged the Election Commission on Wednesday to take note of claims made by Siddaramaiah’s son that voters had been bribed with cookers and iron boxes to help the Karnataka chief minister win the Varuna seat. He sought the dissolution of the Congress government.

The former chief minister also requested the Union government to conduct a detailed investigation into the irregularities that allegedly took place before the Assembly elections held in May.

In a viral video, Yathindra Siddaramaiah is heard purportedly saying that cookers and iron boxes were distributed among voters from the Madiwala community in parts of Mysuru to help the Congress in the Varuna constituency, where Siddaramaiah was elected from.

“I have repeatedly said that this government has assumed power in Karnataka by bribing voters. The son of CM Siddaramaiah himself has revealed the truth,” he said.

Kumaraswamy alleged that such irregularities had taken place in all the 224 constituencies of the state, adding that voters were influenced by guarantee cards distributed door to door. “This is the largest electoral fraud in independent India,” the former chief minister claimed.

“The Election Commission should take the issue seriously and conduct a thorough investigation into the claims made by Yathindra. All MLAs from Congress should be expelled. The central government too should probe the matter,” he said.

After the video of the speech of the chief minister’s son went viral on Tuesday evening, the BJP urged the poll panel to take cognisance of the claims. “If the remarks made by him are true, then it is a serious offence,” former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said.
