K’taka CM Siddaramaiah slams BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde over Constitution remarks

Siddaramaiah recalled that Hegde had previously spoken about changing the Constitution when he was serving as the Union minister.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said there would be bloodshed if the Constitution was changed. He made the statement while reacting to BJP Uttara Kannada MP Anantkumar Hegde’s remark that the saffron party would amend the Constitution after securing a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha.

“The Constitution has to be amended because Congress people have fundamentally altered it by introducing some unnecessary things, especially laws that subjugate the Hindu community. If all this has to change, it cannot be done without a two-thirds majority,” Hegde had said at an event on Saturday at Siddapur in Uttara Kannada district.

Siddaramaiah recalled that Hegde had previously spoken about changing the Constitution when he was serving as the Union minister. “This is a conspiracy of the BJP. They are not seeking a majority (in Lok Sabha polls) for the welfare of the nation or the people, but are asking for a majority to change the Constitution,” he said.

The CM alleged that the BJP wanted a Constitution in accordance with Manusmriti. “If the Constitution is changed, there will be bloodshed in the country. That is why (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi is floating this idea through Anantkumar Hegde,” Siddaramaiah said.

The BJP, he said, had two choices, either to “oust Hegde immediately from their party or to openly agree with what he said. Let this General Election revolve around this issue.”

There is anger among the people in Uttara Kannada against Hegde, Siddaramaiah said, adding that “he (Hegde) is creating a false fear among people that Hindutva was under threat, to stir communal sentiments and polarise votes.”
