From 2021 to April 2025, over 8,000 EVs registered in Chandigarh: Data

The rising trend in the sale of EVs can be witnessed from the RLA data, which reveals that while only 251 EVs (including four-wheelers and two-wheelers) were registered in 2021, in the first three months of 2025 till April, 783 EVs have already been registered, which includes — 304 EV cars and 479 two-wheelers.

The sale of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow in Chandigarh as the city saw registration of more than 8,000 private EVs from 2021 till April this year, suggested the latest data by the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA).

This year till April 2025, 304 EV cars have been registered, with 95 in January, 58 in February, 87 in March, and 64 in April.

The rising trend in the sale of EVs can be witnessed from the RLA data, which reveals that while only 251 EVs (including four-wheelers and two-wheelers) were registered in 2021, in the first three months of 2025 till April, 783 EVs have already been registered, which includes — 304 EV cars and 479 two-wheelers.

Further, while in 2022, 996 EVs were registered, which included 253 light motor vehicles (LMVs) and 743 two-wheelers, the sales rose to 3,126 vehicles in 2023 (1,013) LMVs and 2103 two-wheelers.

In 2024, there was a slight drop in registrations (3,078), which included 1,326 LMVs and 1,752 two-wheelers.

On the spike in EV sales in Chandigarh, Sumit, a salesman from Tata said that “availability of charging stations in Chandigarh and new arrival of EV cars, have converted CNG buyers to EV”.

“Also, the education level in Chandigarh is good, so people are more concerned about the environment, and so they prefer EVs,” the salesman added.

Meanwhile, Nitin Aggarwal, a businessman from Daria, Chandigarh credited infrastructure for people preferring electric cars in Chandigarh.

“Now EV charging stations are available. The CNG cars are costly, and have big CNG cylinders in the rear, which leads to lesser interest among people to buy CNG and more preference to EVs,” he added.
