More than 34 hours after a bus accident in Chamba district, locals are still in shock as families performed the last rites of the 52 people, including 18 women, who died in the accident on Saturday.

District teams, including senior revenue and relief officials, visited the villagers and met the family members to disburse cash relief. Some of the families lost their lone earning members.

Most of the victims were coming to Chamba for shopping on the last day of the minjar festival — a popular Chamba fair and there were others commuting daily for small jobs in the town.

Secretary (Transport) Onkar Sharma also visited the accident site. “The accident occurred due to overloading of the bus. There were nearly 103 to 104 people travelling in this 42-seater bus, which was also not in very good condition. The ADC’s probe will look into all theses aspects,” said Onkar.

Meanwhile,Chamba police on Sunday arrested Ravi Kant Bhardwaj, owner of the ill-fated bus along with conductor Mehar Singh,on charges of negligence.
