Six people of a family were kept in isolation ward of the civil hospital here after they were suspected of dropsy.

Six people of a family were kept in isolation ward of the civil hospital here after they were suspected of dropsy. The condition of the patients are stable at the moment but they may be referred to PGI in Chandigarh,civil surgeon Bhag Mal said.

Two from the same family—35-year-old Kamajit Kaur and her 10-year-old son Ajay Kumar—who are from Fatehpur village,had died on Thursday at civil hospital in Ropar.

Mal said a survey was conducted in the village and its adjoining villages,too,but only this family was found to be having dropsy.

He said the mustard oil consumed by the family was suspected to have caused dropsy and the sample have been sent for examination. They had not bought mustard oil from the market but got it extracted from an oil mill.

Arjan Dass,husband of Kamajit,said they had been suffering from swelling of lower limbs and fever for past two months. They had gone to various doctors but it was of no avail.

Besides 40-year-old Arjan Dass; Simar Kaur,60; Avtar Singh,28; Ram Lal,25; Binder,24; and two-year-old Manpreet are under treatment at the civil hospital.
