Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cried foul over the mayoral elections with the president of the city unit of BJP Sanjay Tandon saying that it was a mockery of democracy.
Tandon alleged that the nominated councillors voted for the party that was instrumental in nominating them to the House.
The nominated councillors met the candidates of both parties. What merit did they see in the Congress candidates to vote for them? The newly elected Mayor did does not know the issues of the civic body and had to read them from a piece of paper. It seems that for the Opposition to elect its Mayor, there will be a need for having two-third elected councillors, alleged Tandon.
Meanwhile Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the General House after the civic body polls. On being questioned about nomination of family members of Congress leaders in the MC House,he stated that it was not written anywhere that the family members cannot be nominated.
About the loss of the heavyweights of the party,he said that it was the peoples decision and it was time to move forward. Bansal further added that he was in favour of open ballot. He said that nominated councillors should not indulge in politicking as was witnessed in the past five years.
Bansal said,We will seek everyones co-operation. Constructive criticism is welcome. The party will work for the development and betterment of the city. The focus will be on transparent administration. Sanitation in the city needs to be improved.
