After the recent implementation of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system in Class IX and X,the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is now in the process of collecting feedback from principals, teachers, students, parents and educators.
The practice has been introduced with the aim of getting feedback from as many people about the changes experimented in the study material, pattern as well as evaluation system for Class IX and X. The board is also in the process of compiling the feedback received on regular basis.
The respondents can fill in the one-page feedback form with 12 questions which is available on the official website of the board. Anyone including a principal, teacher, student, parent, educator or any other person can fill in the feedback form and submit it there only. The type of questions on CCE range from its understanding to the implementation and the kind of activities undertaken by schools, etc.
All the questions; both objective and subjective are available with choices for respondents to choose from. Interestingly, the choices given to the respondents are not only related to academics but also the growth of a child. Some of the questions on the understanding of CCE include whether CCE would help children to become more confident, better human beings, better learners or better citizens.
While the question on formative assessment in schools have the options of being done in a variety of modes including oral, practical, written, practical assessments or being done in-class-in school activity or being given as homework only, being taken as classwork only, has too many tests attached or overloading the students and parents. The question on the implementation of CCE by the schools include with or without understanding,in right spirit,in appropriate way or inappropriate way.
The feedback system was recently initiated after the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation was introduced on April 1 in all the CBSE affiliated schools in the country. The response is good so far. This will certainly help the board evaluate the new system and also make amendments,if required. Also, the aim is to know whether schools have a clear idea of the system and are not overburdening students with assignments which are against the
tenets of the CCE, said official spokesperson of CBSE Rama Sharma.
As per the CCE scheme applied in CBSE syllabus of Class IX and X,the syllabi and marking pattern for these classes has been revised. This constitutes dividing the syllabus into two terms (semesters) for each class with more stress on creative and outdoor activities.
The assessment for Class IX and X is divided into two parts-Summative Assessment (SA) and Formative Assessment (FA). While SA would constitute 60 per cent of the total marks,FA would be of the remaining 40 per cent in each class.
The annual term has been divided into two terms or semesters. While the first semester would have a weightage of 40 per cent, the second semester would have 60 per cent weightage. On the basis of these, final grades would be given to students in Class IX and X.
According to the Board guidelines, the Formative Assessment lays more stress on creative skills and performing arts. These include plays, script writing, reading projects, story writing, dance, yoga, gardening, scouting and guiding, drama, craft, debate, drawing, poster making,on the spot painting, theater, slogan writing, science quiz, science exhibition, folk art,Olympiads, etc.
