Dr Dhillon asked to continue even after completing maximum age bar

Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Chairman Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon has got another extension for one year with effect from June 2 to June 1,2012. The development assumes significance as on June 2,Dhillon completes 65 years of age — the maximum age bar provided for the post in the PSEB Act,1969.

But before amending the law provision, the state government on Tuesday evening had issued formal orders giving him a go-ahead to continue on the coveted post.

“I have been granted extension for another year and the Principal Secretary,Education, has issued formal orders to this effect,” Dhillon told The Indian Express over phone on Wednesday evening. On how the extension was granted without necessary amendment in the Act,the PSEB Chairman said: “Extension has been granted in anticipation of the amendment.” Endorsing this,Punjab Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan — who had earlier recommended Dhillon’s extension — said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has issued instructions to this effect and the amendment in the Act will be made in the next Cabinet meeting through an ordinance.

Having served as the professor and head of the department of History, dean students welfare foreign students and director sports at the Punjabi University in Patiala,Dhillon was appointed as the PSEB Chairman on August 11,2007,for three years,on expiry of which he was granted an extension till he attained the age of 65.

Though Dhillon has been credited with several reforms and improvements in the PSEB,he had courted several controversies as well. The alleged relaxation of norms to facilitate recruitment of his children, excessive purchase of paper and hiring private firms — held responsible for a major goof-up in compilation of last PSEB results — were some of the major controversies surrounding Dhillon.
