After almost a week of announcing that it will conduct an independent probe into the death of 17-year-old Anupama, the PGI authorities on Friday finally constituted an external committee to look into the lapses and the delay in the treatment of the teenager which ultimately led to her demise.
As per the orders of the PGI Director,Dr Yogesh Chawla, the five member committee comprises Dr S S Gill,vice-chancellor Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and a former head of the Orthopedics Department,PGIMER,who will be the chairman of the committee,Prof M C Mishra, head of the Department of General Surgery and chief of Trauma Centre,AIIMS,New Delhi,Dr Rajiv Vadera,Medical Superintendent,Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,Prof Y K Batra of the Department of Anesthesia,PGIMER and Dr Vipin Kaushal, deputy medical superintendent,PGIMER who will be the convenor of the committee.
The orders, incidentally,do not mention the deadline given to this committee for submitting its report, unlike in the past wherein the internal inquiry committee was asked to submit the report within 48 hours.
However, the family members of the deceased Anupama have no faith left either in the institute or in its inquiry committees. Speaking with Chandigarh Newsline,Amit Sarkar,Anupamas father said, We got to know about the committee being formed from somebody else. However, even this committee has only doctors just as the previous inquiry committee had. The doctors will not find faults in doctors. The committee should have at least one member who was non-medico. We have no faith left in any inquiry committee. We are still in mourning but we want justice for our daughter and for that we will take legal recourse in days to come.
Earlier,a four member inquiry committee had given a clean chit to the doctors and staff attending to Anupama and had blamed the overcrowding in the hospital as the reason for the unfortunate incident. Following this, the director of the institute had even said he was sorry about the incident and had advocated a synchronisation of the three government hospitals in the city, including GMSH 16,GMCH 32 and PGIMER.
