9,500 apply for admission to 4,340 seats in 26 colleges of Chandigarh,Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur as deadline for form submission ends
Following the trend of one of the most sought-after graduation courses,BCom has fetched applications more than twice the number of seats in 26 colleges. For 4,340 seats, around 9,500 admission forms have been received by the University Business School (UBS),the centralised office of Panjab University (PU) that is coordinating the admission process for 26 colleges in Chandigarh,Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur.
As many as 9,130 undisputed forms have been entered by the staff till 5 pm. More than 500 disputed forms received by the office are yet to be documented. These include those where the applicant has either filled in incomplete information or missed out some documents to be attached, said Prof A K Vashisht of UBS,the coordinator for BCom admissions.
He added that a similar number of forms was received in the previous year. Though counselling was conducted physically, this year it would be done online for the convenience of applicants.
The admission list will be uploaded on the Universitys official website on June 28. This will include college allotment on the basis of merit and preference of the applicant.
College allotment will be for all seats in all the different categories, including general and reserved. Though the final dates would be decided only after an Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday,a period of around four days is expected to be given to the applicants for fee submission in their respective allotted colleges.
This will be followed by the first movement list, which will depend on the number of seats lying vacant after the admission list. If necessary,a second movement list will be prepared. Chances for the same this year are very bleak as the seats would already be allotted on the basis of the applicants preferences. Any seat left vacant against the reserved category after the admission list would be de-reserved and added to the general category, said Prof Vashisht.
With better results, the cut-offs are expected to be higher this year. Last year students who scored a second division and below in their class XII examinations failed to get admission (in the unreserved category) in BCom in any of the colleges of Chandigarh. The division of seats among the UT and the general pool is 85 and 15 per cent respectively.
Cut-offs to be based on score point system
Each applicants class XII percentage would be calculated taking five subjects in account. While the mandatory subject would be English, the remaining four would be the best scored subjects irrespective of the stream in which the student has completed class XII. Now,the additional score point of 16 would come into play. The total score point would be of 116. This implies that a maximum of four points each are given for four subjects – Accounts,Economics/ Maths,Business Studies and Commercial studies. Thus, students who have studied these subjects would get a preference over those from the Science or Arts streams.
