SIT constituted to probe conductors recruitment scam
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh police today constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the ongoing conductors recruitment scam in the Chandigarh transport department. The SIT shall be headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (crime) Satbir Singh. According to sources,the Director (transport) today sent the official communication to the Chandigarh police,along with the requisite documents,pertaining the recruitment,based on which the Chandigarh Police today constituted the SIT. The recruitment for the posts of 144 conductors was held last year in October,when the irregularities surfaced as the UT vigilance,raided various examination centres and caught nine persons who were found impersonating in the written exams. Recently,the UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil has recommended legal action into the entire scam. The recruitment was also scrapped on the orders of the UT Administrator recently,after a Sub divisional Magistrate submitted his inquiry report and highlighted various irregularities in the recruitment.
Gooni Prakash denied anticipatory bail
PANCHKULA: District courts today denied anticipatory bail to Gooni Prakash,Haryana president of a faction of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU). A case has been registered against him and three others for staging an attack on him. The police had arrested Ram Sarup,resident of Sonumajra village of Kaithal,and Sukhvir and Omdeep,both from Faral village-native district of Gooni Prakash,in this regard. They connived with Prakash in planning the attack to implicate Randeep,Ashok,Sonu and Ratan Mann in the case. In the court today,Dharminder Chaudhry,public prosecutor,said that the police needed to interrogate him to know whether he himself had brought the weapon for attack and also the rope using which he made injury marks on his body had to be recovered. A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder),182 (false information,with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person),196 (using evidence known to be false),201 (causing disappearance of evidence),120B (criminal conspiracy),211 (false charge made with intent to injure) and Arms Act has been registered against all the four accused.
One dies in railway accident
PANCHKULA: A 39-year-old Manimajra resident was killed as a train overran him near Chandimandir railway station today. Ramgopal used to work as a watchman in Shimla. After the accident,he was taken to General Hospital,Sector 6,Panchkula,where he succumbed to his injuries said SI Yashpal Singh of General Railway Police. His body has been handed over to family members after post mortem.
Two sentenced to life imprisonment
CHANDIGARH: A local court here awarded life imprisonment to two persons today in connection with murder of a fruit-seller. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the accused. The case dates back to
December 2009. The Court awarded life term to Karamvir and Varun,both residents of Dadu Majra. The accused had stabbed a fruit seller to death near the Dadu Majra Colony. The killers had dragged Rajesh,the victim,to a secluded place,robbed him of cash and other articles and stabbed him repeatedly. Initially the Chandigarh Police had registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC,but converted it to Section 302 and Section 34 (common intention) after the victim was declared dead.
Constables cellphone stolen
CHANDIGARH: The mobile phone of a police constable was allegedly stolen by an unidentified man in Sector 17 on Tuesday afternoon. The incident took place when constable Sewa Singh posted with the prisoner cell of Chandigarh police was on his way to the district court in Sector 17. An unidentified person stole Sewa Singhs cell phone outside the court. The constable came to know about the theft in the court premises when he did not find the mobile in his pocket. Immediately,he called the number,but it was switched off, police said. A case was registered in the Sector 17 police station and police has put the stolen cell number on surveillance to trace the criminals involved in the theft.
