B Com admission process to remain online this year at PU

In 2011,however,the varsity even made the counselling online but had to restore it to the initial process.

To ease the admission process for its much sought-after B Com course, the Panjab University (PU) authorities have decided to continue with the centralised online admission process for city-based colleges this year, while affiliated institutes located in the two cites of Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana have been asked to conduct the process themselves.

This decision comes in the wake of senators representing the colleges having pointed out that a lack of internet facilities,in certain areas of Punjab, made it difficult for students to file the forms online. Moreover,it was also brought to the notice of the authorities that some of the students failed to manage seats in their preferred colleges while in other institutions,a large number of seats are lying vacant.

The centralised admission process for B Com was started in 2010 with authorities bringing all 11 city-based colleges and those in Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana under its ambit. As per the process, students had to fill the admission forms online, but had to be physically present for the counselling.

Syndic and Senator,Dr Jagwant said the centralised admission process turned out to be a very lengthy process and most students, after having gained admission, kept changing colleges as per the availability of seats, which hampered teaching. Secondly, most students prefer admissions in Chandigarh colleges leading to vacancies in the Punjab-based institutions.

In 2011,however,the varsity even made the counselling online but had to restore it to the initial process. The centralised admission process for B Com was started to bring transparency, accountability and minimise expenditure on prospectuses.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, former coordinator of online admissions,Dr Karamjit Singh of the University Business School (UBS) said: “With this system, students are just required to fill online forms and have to remain present at one place for counselling. Earlier, students interested in the B Com course used to buy prospectuses of all the colleges and their family members had to visit all the colleges just to check in which college they would get a seat.”

“I witnessed the entire process being its coordinator. It is the best way to smoothen the admissions, but with certain colleges located in Punjab faced problems. The Senate has decided not to involve colleges located in Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana cities in this process,” he added.
