A member of the five-member committee constituted to peruse the controversial Bhav Sagar Samunder Amarbani Granth has given a report in favour of Baba Piara Singh Bhaniara.

Baba Piara Singh had filed a petition challenging a ban on the publication of the book – issued by the government on December 15,2008. During the resumed hearing of the petition on Friday, the Full Bench perused the report given by the five-member committee where it turned out that one of the members,Drashan Singh, had found nothing objectionable in the book.

After going through the report, the Bench ordered it to be resealed. The case has been posted for July 7,to decide whether the copy of the report should be provided to the petitioner’s counsel.

The committee was constituted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the government had failed to give a definite answer about the credentials of those who had dubbed the manuscript as objectionable. The report originally prepared in Punjabi, now translated into English, was placed on record before a Full Bench comprising Justice M M Kumar,Justice M M S Bedi and Justice Jitendra Chauhan.

The five-member committee comprises Prof Balwant Singh Dhillon of Amritsar GNDU,Jodh Singh of Patiala Punjabi University,Naresh Saini,Thakur Das Ranjan of Ludhiana and Darshan Singh of Ram Darbar in Chandigarh. After going through the text on the previous date of hearing, the Bench had asked the state to disclose the identity of those who had pointed out objectionable parts in the book, which resulted in the ban.
